Commuters were hastily evacuated from an MRT train at Dhoby Ghaut during evening peak hour on Tuesday 19 February, when smoke was emitted from the mobile phone of a passenger.
SBS Transit, which runs the line, said via its spokesperson that the evacuation was just a precautionary measure, and no fire or injuries were reported. The smoke emitted by the mobile phone was from a passenger who was in the North East Line (NEL) at Dhoby Ghaut Station, which happened at about 6:30pm. The affected train has already been routed back to the depot for safety checks. SCDF confirmed that they received a call for help at around 6:30pm, but their officers' assistance was not required once they reached the station.
However, SCDF was called to Sengkang depot to check on the mobile phone that caused the evacuation, and SCDF stated that the the cause was accidental and was of an electrical origin.
