An SMRT staff had to have his right foot amputated after an accident involving a maintenance vehicle on the tracks near Joo Koon MRT Station. Reports have emerged that the staff, a man in his late 50s, had his right foot crushed by the track tamping vehicle, which is used to to compact the ballast that supports the tracks.

The man, who is married with three adult children, is currently in a stable condition, although still in a state of shock, family members have confirmed. He is still warded in the ICU of the National University Hospital. The man was injured as he was preparing for the engineering vehicle to move back to the depot after completion of maintenance works when the accident happened.

SMRT stated that they will conduct a full investigation on the accident, which is the most serious one yet since an accident on tracks in 2016 claimed the lives of two of their employees.
