On the morning of 7 August 2018, Mrs Yue-Chang, the vice-principal of Catholic Junior College (CJC) was addressing the issue of absenteeism towards JC2 students in an auditorium. During the session, the vice-principal made a comment claiming that CJC is not some neighbourhood secondary school where most students have family issues. She has since expressed deep regret for her comments.

Jurong MP, Mr Ang Wei Neng, a member of the Government Parliamentary Committee for Education brushed off the incident when asked about it by saying "I am sure she (Mrs Yue-Chang) meant well for the CJC students, but she probably wants to be more careful with her choice of words."

The principal of CJC, Mrs Lim, also stepped up and tried to clear the air by explaining that the remarks that were made were not intentional and were never meant to single out students from neighbourhood secondary schools.

Do you think this is something a vice-principal should say to her students? Does she think that CJC is an elite school where neighbourhood students can't get into?

A video of a maid hitting an old woman went viral today. In the video, the maid looks like she was feeding the wheelchair-bound woman. From time to time, she got impatient and "knocked" the poor old woman on the head.

According to online sources, the incident happened at the void deck of one of the HDB flats at Telok Blangah.

Fortunately, the video taker did not just record the video and do nothing about it. A netizen who reacted to the video said that the maid was eventually "caught" and interviewed for her wrongdoing. Whatever happened afterwards remains unclear.

How can she be so violent towards an old lady? Who is her employer? How long has her behaviour been going on? Is there a reason behind her unacceptable attitude?

It's heartbreaking to see the old woman taking the hits and being helpless. Will MOM do something about it?

Many things have changed over the years. Many of us used to love living in Singapore. But not anymore. A netizen penned down the thoughts on the matter:

"I remember years ago when our whole family will celebrate National day together and watch the parade together. My sisters and I would fight over who would hang up the flag that year. We were happy. Things were simple. We trusted the government that they would give their best in building this nation. I was happy at the prospect that my future children will grow up here

Now, as I look out of my block, I don't see flags. I don't see families wearing matching clothes with our national colors on them. What I see is Singaporeans lamenting over the hike in bills, our CPF monies and that one person who says people will be mediocre for earning below a certain amount.

As each national day go by, things get worse. Singaporeans are losing their pride for the country. I still love the nation but I can't help feeing like my passion and pride for the country is slowly draining as well. Will the change of a government make things better? Who knows? It's worth a shot. But will it ever happen? One can only hope.

With love,
A nation loving mother of two"

Fish & Co and Delifrance Halal certifications have both expired in March and June, respectively, this year. Fish & Co's application for renewal of the certification was rejected in February this year for not meeting Muis' Halal Certification Conditions. As of now, a Muis spokesperson has confirmed that they have not received another application from them.

On a Facebook post by Fish & Co on Wednesday, they claimed that they were still complying with the Halal standards and that halal certification consultant, HalalHub, is working on renewing the certification.

Delifrance general manager Mr Alvin Goo said the company is working to resolve some technical issues, which "are not related to food preparation, materials used or presentation". They are also working with an expert of the field to resolve the issues to gain back the certification.

You're happy you applied for a BTO flat. You're even happier you got it. You're on cloud nine when told that your keys are ready, but suddenly you feel like shit after being told that you have to pay $84,000 cash upfront before you can get your house.

Welcome to Singapore, where your dreams can be turned into nightmares in an instant.

New BTO home owner Liza (pseudoname) was told, without an advance notice, that she had to pay $84,147 in cold hard cash after deducting CPF and loans. She is currently working full-time while her husband is working part-time as a porter, but the both of them cannot cough out such a huge sum of money in a short time.

According to Transitioning.org, "the way HDB mysteriously omit out the loan details for many BTO flat owners have caused heartache for many new flat owners as no one can raise so much cash few days before getting the house keys effectively turning a happy occasion into a nightmarish experience".

Many couples have also ended up going separate ways due to money matters regarding BTO applications.

"As for Liza, she has asked to downgrade her flat to a 3-room one in view of the cash outlay but she has told us that the HDB officer informed her now they will place her flat on hold for a few months until her husband could get a full-time job.

How HDB operates nowadays is a mystery and as more people apply for new BTO flats which can cost up to $200,000 for a 3-room flat in a remote area, one can only hope that the HDB HLE loan department is transparent and upfront on the way it approves housing loan so that new flat owners won’t receive a heart-attack days before their happiness turn into a nightmare".
